FAQs
How long does is take to find a nanny?
Most families find their nanny within 4–8 weeks. If you have specific requirements, it can take a little longer, so we suggest starting your search around 2–3 months before you’d like your nanny to begin. This gives plenty us time for interviews, notice periods, and settling in.
Will I be the nanny's employer?
Yes — when you employ a nanny directly, you become their employer. This means setting up payroll, paying tax and National Insurance, and providing holiday entitlement. Don’t worry, we can guide you through this or recommend a trusted payroll provider to make things simple.
Do I need to provide my nanny with a contract?
Yes. By law your nanny must have a written employment contract. A contract is really useful because it sets out clear expectations and protects both you and your nanny. We provide contract templates and will help you tailor them to your family.
Do I have to pay pension contributions?
If your nanny meets the government rules for auto enrolment you will need to set up a workplace pension and make contributions as their employer. A payroll service can manage this for you.
What's the difference between a Nanny and a Babysitter?
A nanny provides consistent, professional childcare — often full or part-time and usually works within your home as part of your daily family routine. A babysitter is typically used occasionally, often in the evenings, and may not have the same level of training or responsibility.
How many hours does a nanny work?
This depends on your family’s needs. Some families hire a full-time nanny, while others look for part-time or after-school care. We’ll talk through your requirements to match you with a nanny who fits your schedule.
How do you vet the nannies?
All nannies are thoroughly vetted before we introduce them to families. We verify references, check identity and right to work in the UK, and ensure an up-to-date DBS certificate is in place. Every nanny we work with holds a paediatric first aid qualification, and we also check driving licences where relevant, along with reviewing their qualifications and training.
How will I know I'm employing the right nanny?
The right nanny will feel like a natural fit for your family. You’ll notice they not only have the skills and experience you’re looking for, but they also connect warmly with your child/children and share your values around childcare.
At Your Nanny Friend, we support you through the whole process — from shortlisting and interviews to trial days and final decisions. This way, you’ll have the reassurance that your choice is based on more than just a CV.
What happens if things don't work out?
We understand that sometimes things don’t go as planned. That’s why we offer ongoing support and guidance, and in certain cases can help you find a free replacement nanny. Your peace of mind is our priority.
