Ofsted Registered Nannies: What You Really Need to Know

If you’re a nanny in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, or Cambridgeshire, you may have noticed more families asking specifically for Ofsted registered nannies. It’s something I’ve seen a lot of recently in my work running my nanny agency, Your Nanny Friend.  I think it’s something worth chatting about, especially if you’re thinking about growing your opportunities or helping families access funding.

Here’s the scoop: families are increasingly looking for registration so they can use Tax-Free Childcare. Nurseries can feel more affordable and tempting with all the funding which is now available. But many parents still want the flexibility, one-to-one attention, and continuity only a nanny can offer. Being Ofsted registered allows families to access funding while keeping that personalised, home-based childcare.

I’ve had quite a few chats with families lately who were tempted by free nursery funding, only to realise their little ones weren’t getting the care they’d hoped for. In nurseries, one adult is usually looking after three babies and for very young children, there’s really no substitute for the calm, one-to-one attention a nanny can give.

A quick heads up: not all families are eligible for Tax-Free Childcare — households earning over a certain amount won’t qualify — so Ofsted registration won’t always be a deciding factor. But for many families, it’s an appealing option.

So…. what is Ofsted registration, really?

Let’s be clear: Ofsted registration doesn’t make you a “better” nanny. It’s not about proving your skills or experience — if you’re reading this, you’re already a professional nanny doing all the right things!

Registration is mainly about eligibility for funding. Families are more likely to hire you if you’re on the Voluntary Childcare Register because it helps them access Tax-Free Childcare.

Who can register?

To qualify as a nanny, you must care for children in their own home, and for no more than two families at a time. More than that, is of course classed as a childminder.  And childminders we are not!

How do you join the Voluntary Childcare Register?

Here’s what you’ll need:

Enhanced DBS check – On the update register.

Childcare qualification or training – A Level 2 childcare qualification or relevant training like a Level 3 Award in Home-Based Childcare.

Paediatric first aid – A full 12-hour course (no shortcuts!).

Public liability insurance – Nanny-specific, so you’re covered.

Think of it as ticking boxes for the paperwork side of things — your day-to-day nannying doesn’t change.

I would just like to high light that you're expected to have all of the above if you're securing a nanny job through a nanny agency like Your Nanny Friend, whether you're Ofsted registered or not.

What happens once you’re registered?

Being on the Voluntary Ofsted Register is mostly business as usual. The main difference is that you now need to inform Ofsted of any accidents, incidents, or significant events that happen while you’re caring for the children.

Otherwise, it’s all things you’re already doing:

  • Keeping children safe, happy, and engaged

  • Maintaining good records (emergencies, allergies, routines)

  • Knowing how to spot and report any concerns about abuse or neglect.

Inspections are very rare, and if one does happen, it’s simply to make sure you’re already providing professional, safe, and nurturing childcare. You’ll be asked about the points above and as an experienced nanny, it’s all standard practice, so there’s nothing to worry about.

Who pays for registration?

I know fees can feel like a lot. The good news? Many families in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Cambridgeshire are happy to cover the registration costs because Ofsted registration allows them to reclaim up to 20% of childcare costs through Tax-Free Childcare. Most families are supportive once you explain it, and it’s always worth discussing upfront during interviews.

The cost for Ofsted Registration on the voluntary register is £114 per year.

Is it right for you?

If you want to:

  • Attract more families

  • Make your nanny profile stand out

  • Give parents peace of mind

  • Stay competitive for nanny jobs in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, or Cambridgeshire

…then Ofsted registration is worth considering.

Think of it as opening doors, not changing what you already do. You’re already providing fantastic, personalised childcare, this just makes it easier for families to afford it and gives them confidence that they’re choosing the right childcare option for their family.
